Carpet Cleaners W14 Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety Policy sets out how Carpet Cleaners W14 manages safety for our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public while delivering professional carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning services. Our aim is to prevent accidents, protect health and comply with all applicable health and safety legislation, guidance and industry best practice.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Carpet Cleaners W14 is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for everyone affected by our activities. We will identify and control risks arising from our work, provide suitable equipment and cleaning products, ensure safe systems of work and deliver appropriate information, instruction and training to all staff.
Our key objectives are to prevent injury and ill health, minimise exposure to hazardous substances, maintain safe working practices in all client premises and promote a culture where safety is everyone’s responsibility.
Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety lies with the company management, who will ensure this policy is implemented, monitored and regularly reviewed. Management will provide the necessary resources to meet our legal and moral duties and will lead by example in following all safety procedures.
Supervisors are responsible for communicating this policy to employees, conducting on-site checks, and ensuring that safe working procedures are followed at all times. They must report hazards, near-misses and incidents promptly and assist in investigations and corrective actions.
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Staff must cooperate with company rules, attend training, use equipment correctly, wear required personal protective equipment and report any hazards, accidents or concerns without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Carpet Cleaners W14 carries out risk assessments for all significant hazards associated with our carpet and upholstery cleaning activities. This includes risks related to manual handling, use of electrical machinery, slips and trips, chemical exposure, noise, lone working and driving between jobs.
For each job, staff will consider site-specific risks, such as confined spaces, poor lighting, uneven flooring, pets, vulnerable people and access routes. Control measures are identified and implemented before work starts, and our methods are adapted when conditions change. Work will be postponed or halted if a serious and unmanageable risk is identified.
Chemical Safety and COSHH
Cleaning solutions and stain removal products are selected and used in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety data. Products are labelled clearly, stored securely and transported safely between locations. We follow the principles of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations by assessing exposure risks and applying practical controls.
Staff receive training on dilution, application and safe disposal of cleaning solutions, as well as emergency actions in case of spills or contact with skin or eyes. Where possible, low hazard and environmentally considerate products are selected without compromising cleaning performance.
Safe Use of Equipment
All carpet cleaning machinery, such as hot water extraction units, vacuum cleaners and agitation machines, is maintained in good working order and inspected regularly. Electrical equipment is checked for visible damage before use and removed from service immediately if any defect is found.
Cables are routed to minimise trip hazards, and machines are operated only by trained personnel. Staff follow manufacturer guidelines for use, cleaning and storage. Vehicles used to transport equipment are loaded securely so that items cannot shift or fall during transit.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Carpet cleaning often involves lifting, carrying and moving equipment, hoses and furniture. Carpet Cleaners W14 provides manual handling training so that staff understand good posture, safe lifting techniques and the importance of assessing weight and route before moving items.
Whenever practicable, equipment with wheels, sliders or handles is used to reduce strain. Heavy items are moved by two or more people or not moved at all if safe handling is not possible. Staff are encouraged to take regular short breaks, rotate tasks and report any musculoskeletal discomfort.
Slips, Trips and Site Housekeeping
Wet cleaning processes can create slippery floors and trailing hoses. To reduce these risks, warning signs are used where appropriate, and work areas are kept as tidy as possible. Excess water is extracted promptly, and access routes are kept clear of equipment and obstacles.
Clients are informed about areas that may be temporarily wet or restricted while cleaning is in progress, and we encourage them to keep children, pets and visitors away from active work zones until surfaces are safe.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment is provided where required by risk assessment. This may include gloves, safety footwear, eye protection, masks or hearing protection depending on the task and products used. Employees must use and care for PPE correctly and report any defects or losses for prompt replacement.
Health, Welfare and First Aid
Carpet Cleaners W14 aims to safeguard the general health and wellbeing of our team. Staff are encouraged to inform management of any medical conditions that may affect their work so that reasonable adjustments can be considered. Adequate rest breaks are built into schedules, especially when working on multiple or lengthy jobs.
First aid kits are provided in vehicles or carried by team leaders. All accidents, however minor, are recorded and investigated to identify causes and prevent recurrence. Serious incidents are escalated immediately to management.
Training, Information and Communication
All employees receive induction training covering company health and safety rules, emergency procedures, correct use of equipment and safe handling of cleaning products. Refresher training is provided regularly and whenever a new process, substance or machine is introduced.
Safety instructions, risk assessments and method statements are made available to staff, and any changes are communicated clearly. Employees are encouraged to raise concerns, offer suggestions and participate in improving our safety standards.
Emergency Procedures
Staff are trained to respond appropriately to emergencies such as fire, electrical incidents, chemical spills or personal injury occurring during a job. They must follow the emergency arrangements in place at the premises where they are working and cooperate with building managers and emergency services.
In the event of a serious incident, work will be stopped, the area made safe where possible and management informed. Follow-up actions, including support for those affected and review of procedures, will be undertaken promptly.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety Policy is monitored on an ongoing basis and formally reviewed at regular intervals or following significant changes in operations, legislation or incidents. Carpet Cleaners W14 is committed to continual improvement in health and safety performance and to maintaining safe, reliable carpet and upholstery cleaning services for all our customers.
